A B O U T M EWhat makes me tick? The best thing a creative manager can do is make decisions; the next best thing is give direction. I do both, and it’s good to know the difference. When making assignments, I will sometimes layout a specific course of action to save time or change the direction of the piece. Other times I’ll leave it open-ended so that the creative people we hire can problem-solve the assignment. You have to use your brain on the work we do. I like working hard, having fun and completing a challenge. And I like leading a team of talented people. about me

W E B S I T E SI worked with interactive advertising and news managers to create prototypes for new online products. I established the look and feel as well as the functionality of websites or publications down to the micro level. These prototypes were then used as blueprints for web designers to build out the websites. The sites covered a wide range of topics. RockfordWoman.com, for example, was designed to be a social networking/shopping site. We also produced local sites for health, business and entertainment.

M A R K E T I N GWhile at the Rockford Register Star I saw a need for journalists to join the paper’s marketing department. So in addition to my existing duties, I volunteered my department to help out. I became the self-appointed marketing art director. Later, I noticed the need for copywriters and editors. I enlisted more volunteers, and this group turned into a team. What I discovered was, I was good at it, and it didn’t seem that much different than what I was already doing—presenting a clear message, with clear visuals to support compelling pieces. marketing

After growing up dissecting clocks, I still love to take things apart. That’s the best way to figure out how stuff works. Now I use visuals, text, audio, video and a bunch of other tools to explain how it all works and what it means. But it's not just things I like to take apart — it's data too. If you want to make me happy, give me more data. Or, if you don’t know what data to get, I can help there too. Once I have the data, I can determine how best to display it in order to support the story. The work on this site represents carefully edited information that was deliberately designed. infographics

Here's my entry for WLS Talk Show contest. I chose to talk about my 11-year old son Ethan and his brush with bullying at school. It's really heart breaking for a parent to hear that their child was a victim— nay— survivor of bullying. continues |
