A town like no other
New Philadelphia was the first town in America to be be legally platted and registered by an African-American. The Illinois town existed between the homes of two American legends, Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, in the decades before the Civil War.
Frank McWorter, New Philadelphia's isn't a legend yet, although some of his descendants and others say he should be.
Before establishing New Philadelphia, McWorter saved enough money to buy freedom for himself and his wife. He freed other members of his family by selling the town's lots. ...
